Sheldon Harvey (Navajo) Original 36x14x9 Inch Yeii Mixed Media Wood Sculpture
You are viewing a modern abstract mixed media sculpture by celebrated Contemporary Native American Artist Sheldon Harvey Navajo b. This sculpture is based on the First World Beings in the Navajo Creation Story. According to the Navajo Creation Story, mankind has progressed through four different worlds. The first world was believed to be pitch black and filled with the Air-Spirit Beings who were insect-like. This is an interpretation of one of those Air-Spirit Beings in wood, metal, and bright paints. There are a number of divinities in the Navaho pantheon known as Yeii... Which is translated "god" or genius. What distinction exists between the Yeii or yéi and other gods is not easy to determine definitely. Yéii seem to be deities of minor importance to those previously mentioned and to be more numerous. Thus, while there is but one Estsánatlehi, but one Nayénezg? Ni, and but one To'badsistsíni there are several Hastséhogan and several Hastséyalti, who are chiefs of the yéi. The yéi are supposed to abid in certain localities, and in prayers in their honor the home is mentioned of the yéi to whom appeal is specially made. The yéi are supposed to be married and have families. The males are called yébaka; the females, yébaad. Hastsézini, the god of fire, and Hastséoltoi, the divine huntress, or goddess of the chase, belong, as their names indicate, to the yéi; whil Gánaskidi, the harvest god and Tó'nenili, Water Sprinkler, are associated with them in the legends. This is a very new work (2021) that was commissioned by a longtime Santa Fe, New Mexico collector. However the collector has decide to move and is now downsizing their Contemporary Native Art Collection. There are other works by Sheldon Harvey, Tony Abeyta, Dan Namingha, & others available if interested. Painter, carver, creator of mystical images, Sheldon Harvey is a member of the Red Running Into Water Clan of the Diné (Navajo). Although he was trained as a medicine man by his grandfather and great-grandfather; Sheldon always wanted to be an artist. As a young man he attended Diné College, and has worked with Diné artists Don Whitesinger and Tony Abeyta.

Sheldon paints in both acrylics and oils on canvas, creating images that are sometimes representational, sometimes symbolic and always imaginative. His Ye'i figures, carved in wood and decorated with paints, macaw feathers, horsehair, canvas and yucca are among his most creative works. Many are based on the traditional Diné creation stories, and are his own interpretation of what he has heard and read. Harvey works with multiple different mediums. He is known today for his wood sculptures and various acrylic, and oil paintings all of which depict stylized Navajo Yei.

The Navajo Yei is a spirit being which comes from the Navajo stories or myths from their past. When Sheldon creates his art, he uses many different types of wood, acrylic paint, fabrics, parrot feathers which he combines to bring his artistic vision to life. His work depicts spirit beings from the Navajo creation myth and other ancient traditions. Sheldon Harvey's works are included in major collections through out the United States, Europe and Asia.

He has received numerous awards and honors including first place for sculpture and painting at the Santa Fe Indian Market and Best in Show for his oil painting. His innovative style has made him a much sought-after artist by collectors world wide. This item is in the category "Art\Art Sculptures".
